Remedy Description

Add 10 drops of essential oil of thyme to 1 teaspoon of alcohol and

apply to the bite every 3 hours. The next day apply neat lavender oil

3 times a day.

I've had a lot of experience dealing with chigger bites.

Probably a few hundred people at the chigger infested Florida

gatherings I've attended. I've come to the conclusions that there are

kinda 3 levels of reaction to the digestive fluid/poison the chigger

injects. About a third of the people seem to have almost no reaction

and for them its less than a mosquito bite. Another third its similar

to a mosquito bite except the chigger bite seems to itch a lot more.

But there seems to be about a third of the people who have a somewhat

severe reaction. The bite swells up, often a little water blister

forms, it tends to break leaving a weeping wound. And it itches like

nothing you have ever experienced before, you want to claw yourself

open. I happen to be in the group that has the sever reaction to

whatever fluid a chigger injects and since I've gone to quite a few

Florida gatherings I've constantly searched for some relief. The only

remedy I've found that seems to give any relief I found in a book, The

Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, by Valerie Worwood,

one of the best books on aromatherapy. Her recipe:

Add 10 drops of essential oil of thyme to 1 teaspoon of alcohol and

apply to the bite every 3 hours. The next day apply neat lavender oil

3 times a day.

I and most people I've treated with the thyme mixture found much

relief. I tend to use it for a few days rather than just one because

it so much helps to relieve the itching and the neat lavender seems

less effective for that. Thyme is a pretty intense essential oil that

can stimulate the thyroid. It should not be used on children.
