Remedy Description

The most common symptoms of kidney stones are severe pain in the lower middle back (which can

radiate around to the abdomen), increased urination often with blood or mucus, nausea and

vomiting, as well as chills and fever. Sometimes the urinary tube is blocked so the victim has

difficulty passing urine - or cannot pass any at all.

The stones are abnormal accumulations of mineral salts, primarily calcium. Alternatively, but

much less common, they may also be composed of carbonates, phosphates, oxalates or urates. As

your kidneys filter toxins and excess minerals out of your blood, the calcium can collect into a hard

ball. Possible causes include an overactive parathyroid gland allowing elevated levels of calcium

in the blood, dehydration, infections and prolonged periods of inactivity. Many studies have shown

that stones can be precipitated by refined carbohydrates (sugar, white flour), and both antacids and

dairy products are suspected of contributing to the problem. Occasionally pancreatic production of

too much insulin can also cause extra calcium to be excreted.

The stones can lodge anywhere in the urinary tract as your body tries to pass them out, but they are

all formed in the kidneys. If your urinary tube becomes blocked so that you pass little or no urine,

try to urinate while lying down! This will often allow a stone stuck in the bladder to roll back and

free the opening and cut the pain in half. An herb called Valerian in tincture, capsule or tea form

can also cut down on the pain and relax the muscles along your urinary tract to ease the situation.

Juniper Berry Tea (which by the way tastes wonderful) is a diuretic that will help you flush your

entire system but should be avoided if you are pregnant or suffering from a diagnosed kidney

disease. Unsweetened cranberry juice will change your internal pH and help flush. You should

also increase your daily fluid intake to at least 8-10 glasses of pure water daily. It would help if

your water were filtered or distilled or otherwise treated, as both chlorine and fluoride are

extremely harmful - they kill intestinal bacteria and enzymes and combined they become a

dangerous carcinogenic toxin that strains your liver and kidneys as these organs attempt to filter

them out for excretion. Also the insoluble minerals in tap water can contribute to the stone

formation. Don't try boiling your water because the mineral concentration will be that much

greater if you boil away some of the liquid, because the minerals will remain in your pot.

My favorite herbal tea for Kidney Stones is made up of equal parts of Gravel Root, Cornsilk,

Comfrey and - especially if you have an accompanying urinary tract infection, Uva Ursi. Other

herbs said to be helpful include Ginkgo Biloba , Marshmallow Root, Cleavers and Horsetail. I

suggest that Horsetail NOT be used without help from an experienced herbalist and even then it

should not be taken for more than 10 days in any one month. It does stimulate calcium absorption

and it is very high in Silica, which can help push things out. But the herb also has a high Nicotine

content and the Silica is so powerful that it can interfere with blood flow for some people.

Poultices made of Hops and Lobelia will stop the pain. A hot castor oil/ginger pack is excellent for

the liver, gallbladder and the kidneys. I know of several folks who stopped chronic stone problems

by using this hot pack system, which is similar to the system recommended by Edgar Cayce but is

even better. Rub warm castor oil over your liver region (the right side of your abdomen, just below

the ribs). Cover this with cotton cloth soaked in hot-as-you-can-stand-it-without-burning-yourself

Ginger tea. Cover this all with a thick towel and relax for an hour. You'll feel "chemical changes"

in your liver within a short time... by the 2nd or 3rd application you will KNOW the difference.

When the kidney stones are acute I suggest doing this twice a day. For chronic problems, once a

day for a week or two followed by once or twice a week regularly, will get your liver working

better and deal with stone formation at the same time.

Folks who have any kind of chronic kidney problems should avoid the amino acid L-Cysteine

(other than when found in whole foods), antacids, dairy products and foods that contain Oxalic

Acid such as rhubarb, Swiss chard and spinach. Most authorities say you should reduce your salt

intake and cut down on animal protein as well.

If you suffer from an acute attack and the pain is very bad, Homeopathy will almost always help.

Calcarea-Carb, Silicea and Urtica-Urens are 3 Homeopathic remedies that are important. Silicea

helps our bodies expel anything that doesn't belong there, from splinters to stones to mucus and

pus. But be careful and do NOT ever use Silicea if the doctors have put pins, pace-makers or any

metallic object inside of you. Even loose fillings may come out of your teeth! ...

Calc-Carb will help your body adjust its calcium assimilation. Urtica-Urens is important for any

urinary tract problem that involves stinging and burning pain. There are other remedies specific

for Kidney Stones as well. As always, Homeopathic complexes available over the counter at

grocery stores, health food stores and some pharmacies can help acute situations but if the problem

is a chronic one, you need to learn how to choose the remedy most appropriate for you, the

individual. This is because Homeopathy treats the individual person rather than the disease itself.

And I have saved the best for last: I want to explain the use of potato water, which is a technique I

developed and which has NEVER failed to help any of the people to whom I suggested it. The

details of stone formation are just details - the important thing to recognize is that nearly all kidney

stones are due to poor use, storage and recall of calcium. Calcium assimilation is dependent upon

a proper balance of Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D and, to a lesser extent,

Boron and Silica (of which tiny traces are all that's needed).

Now the best source of Vitamin D is to get 20 minutes of direct sun on your face at least 3-4 times

a week, preferably NOT between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Zinc is available in significant amounts in

Nutritional Yeast, egg yolks, fish, lamb, poultry, pecans, pumpkin and sunflower seeds and soy

products (NOT soy sauce however). And you can buy a good Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc

supplement if you are into pills but watch out for your potassium needs and know that Zinc really

should be taken alone and between meals rather than with them. Also be aware that taking in too

much Zinc can interfere with your Copper and Iron balance, so please don't overdo it. Around 20-

30 mg of Zinc is the proper dose for the average American adult.

Rather than gorging yourself on potatoes and bananas and lemons or taking a lot of pills to also

raise your potassium/magnesium levels, I suggest potato water. Boil unpeeled but washed potatoes

in extra water (double your usual volume) until they are soft, strain the liquid and keep this stock

in the refrigerator. The water will contain tons of potassium and magnesium and other minerals. It

tastes delicious... a little cayenne or garlic or parsley will pep it up a bit if necessary and this drink

- 1 to 2 cups daily, will dissolve and prevent calcium stones.
