One thing I noticed when I got rid of my toxic cleaning products was the money I didn’t spend on them any more. I began using unscented dish soap and hot water
to clean glass, borax in place of powdered cleansers, hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach, and baking soda in hotwater to clean just about anything. If you want a scent put a few drops of your favorite essential oil in the water as you clean. Now my house is clean, sanitary and non-polluting - to me or the environment. The chemicals in laundry detergents can be found in 70% of North American streams according to the US Geological Survey. Those chemicals are killing the fish. I like to eat fish. I use non-polluting laundry detergent. I use about half the recommended amount and add borax, which is very inexpensive, to it. I don’t have to kill fish to get my clothes clean. There are tons of homemade cleansers: Baking soda takes the place of scrubbing cleanser, such as Comet. Mix baking soda with water to make a thinner paste, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid and you have a soft cleanser, like SoftScrub Baking soda sprinkled on carpet and vacuumed up is good for removing odors and refreshing the carpeting. You can make your own laundry detergent: melt a bar of clear glycerin soap in 2 cups of water, add 1 cup borax and 1 cup washing soda, stir well; this mixture will be a tad thicker than a gel so add a few more cups of water to get the consitancy of regular liquid laundry detergent. Use 1/2-1cups per large load of laundry. Fake plants can be put in a trash bag with sea salt; close the opening and shake well to get rid of dust and dirt. Use straight white vinegar to mop wood floors. |
