"...In Kenya changaa is popular as a poor man's drink. Sometimes industrial small amounts of methanol and other dangerous chemicals are blended in to increase changaa's potency. In one case the changaa was almost 95% methanol. When a goat liver was dropped into this changaa batch it started to corrode the goat's liver within minutes. The local hospital treateed 166 people. Of these 51 died and 18 people lost their sight. The antidote: the name brand liquor they could not afford in the first place.. With the hospital overflowing, Dr. Wako, dispatched staff to buy up all available Vodka and spirits. After drinking the real alchol the vitims will process the ethanol in that alcohol and allow the more potent alcohol to be excreeted..." from A Poor Man's Solace once Again Delivers a Deadly BLow, New York Times, July 7, 2005 |
