"Gymnema Sylvestre, (GS) a plant native to India has long been used to treat
diabetes. Gymnema contains gymnemic acid which when applied to the tongue block the sweetness of sugar. Note swallowing a tablet or capsule of gymnemia would not have the same effect. GS tea is sometimes sold as a sugar blocker. If you drink the gs tea, then eat a piece of chocolate you will not taste the candy. Gymnemia has been shown to enhance glucose control in diabetic dogs and rabbits. Interesting in animals that had their pancreas removed gymnemia has no effect. So the conclusion is that gymnemia enhances the production of insulin. Animal studies suggest that it accomplishes this by regenerating the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. The dosage for gymnemia is 400 mg per day. It is intresting to note that gymnema is without side effects and that it exhibits its blood sugar lowering effects only in cases of diabetes. Gymnema extract given to healthy volunteers do not produce any blood sugar lowering or hypglcemic effects." -------------- Dr. Bernsteins web page: http://www.diabetes-book.com Source: http://www.diabetes-book.com/testimonials/testimonial54.shtml In a testimonial letter to Dr. Berstein, a writer writes that he uses 6 grams of gs per day in a tea: "Initially his I make the tea with 6 grams (about 3 teaspons) of gs tea daily, and when I started doing that, things came down 5-8 points per reading on the average. |
